Shape Simplification

Shape simplification is the core feature of Value Study. It allows you to reduce complex images down to just 2, 3, 4, or more distinct value levels, making it easy to see the underlying structure of light and shadow.

How it works

Use the slider to choose how many value levels you want. The app will automatically group similar tones together, creating clear value masses. Start with 2 values for a dramatic notan effect, or use 4-5 values for a more detailed study.

Why it's useful

Simplifying values helps you:

  • See the big picture instead of getting lost in details
  • Identify strong compositional patterns
  • Plan your painting with clear value masses
  • Create effective notan studies
  • Improve your understanding of light and form

Tips for use

Start with 2-3 values to see the most dramatic patterns in your image. This is especially useful for checking whether your composition has strong light/dark contrast. Then gradually increase the number of values to see more subtle variations.
